Going once. Going twice. Sold! The Tyler Public Library will hold its second silent book auction from Monday, Dec. 1 to Wednesday, Dec. 17 to benefit the book collection of the Tyler Public Library.
"Items in the silent auction will include books for those who love history, classic literature and funky old books in general," said Evelyn James, library programming associate. "Library users can discover ‘treasures,' do some holiday shopping and support the Library, all at the same time."
Throughout the month, bidders may browse 27 book lots, generally made up of two or more books, grouped by topic, style or age. The lots will be displayed in exhibit cases on the first and second floors of the Library between Monday, Dec. 1 and Wednesday, Dec. 17. Books in the lots have been carefully selected based on rarity, nostalgic value, and special interest topics.
"Who wouldn't want the 1911 second edition of the Secrets of Meat Curing and Sausage Making?" asks James. "That's one of my personal favorites, surpassed only by a 1933 first edition of the Champion Textbook of Embalming. Of course those are just the oddities. We also have works by Shakespeare, Tolkien, Brontë and interesting old editions of novels and non-fiction spanning more than 80 years."
Bid sheets will be located next to the exhibit cases where the lots will be displayed. Anyone may bid on the books, but bidders must have a current Tyler Public Library card on file in order to participate. Library cards are free and require only verification of name and current address (driver's license or copy of a bill). Bidders may bid on items as many times as they wish before the auction closes at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17. Bids will not be disclosed or accepted over the phone or via e-mail.
Once the auction closes, the highest bidder will be contacted by phone, so current contact information is required to be on file with the Library. Auction winners must pay for and pick up their items no later than 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23. Items must be paid for with cash or check; no credit cards will be accepted.
Tyler Public Library is located at 201 S. College in downtown Tyler.
