Participants getting ready for One Night Without A Home Tuesday evening

It's called One Night Without A Home - an event that's part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. It's to promote education, action and awareness, and it started Tuesday night with participants eating dinner at the Salvation Army.

The portions are just someone would be served here if they came for a meal. All the people came to spend 13 hours as a homeless person. Tuesday evening, they'll march to Bergfeld Park for an event featuring speakers, some of whom were formerly or currently homeless. They were planning on spending the night at the park, but because it's going to be below 40 degrees, they are coming back to the Salvation Army.

We're told it's about being as close to real life as possible. Participants aren't allowed to have their watch or a cell phone. They aren't allowed to have any electronics or jewelry.

Many packed a small backpack with everything they will need for tonight, and in the morning they plan on discussing what they learned.
