Salon Hosts Charity Haircut Event

A charity hair-cutting event in Longview today struck at the hearts of many involved, in memory of a teen lost in a tragic auto accident.    Big and little kids alike came out to Vargas Salon in Longview. Twenty hair-dressers and 30 assistants dealt out free haircuts and manicures offered to dozens of children from needy families.

"I think it looks great" said one 11 year old customer.

"Its a benefit for children from pre-K to high school free haircuts and manicures" said salon owner Peter Vargas.

But the event was much more. Held in memorial of 17 year old Jonathan Metoyer, who was killed in an auto accident just 3 weeks ago.

"It effected my kids lives , they knew him and he was a great young man I want them to see that through this their son does live on" Vargas says.

Jonathan's parents were on hand to give out a simple message to parents.

"We would like to ask all the kids growing up out there to be safe in their lives and appreciate their parents" says Jonathans father, Peter Metoyer.

"We want good to come out all the time of the bad" says Jonathans mother, Rosie.

For those who have little but their children, peter says that should be enough.

"Don't linger on the problems be happy with your children and enjoy them" Peter says.

It's hoped that through this event part of Jonathan will live on.

"He will live on through our children through the other children and another generation" Rosie said.

Vargas Salon owners say they will hold the memorial charity event twice a year. Over 20 area businesses sponsored today's event.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
