The Pentagon: Ann Dunwoody becomes first female four-star US General

An Army general will make history today when she picks up her fourth star.

Ann E. Dunwoody will be the first woman in the U.S. military to attain the rank of four - star general. She'll finalize the promotion at a Pentagon ceremony and later make the short trip to her birthplace of Fort Belvoir, Va., where she'll be sworn in as commander of the Army Materiel Command.

She'll be responsible for equipping, outfitting and arming all soldiers. A Pentagon spokesman says she's a bit uncomfortable with the recognition and Dunwoody herself has made it clear that she feels no need for special acclaim. But it's special enough that Defense Secretary Robert Gates will attend her promotion ceremony.

In a statement, Dunwoody says the promotion shows "that the doors continue to open for men and women in uniform."
