Update: Possible racing accident sends three to the hospital

Three people were sent to the hospital after a crash that police say was caused by racing. It happened around 8:30 this morning in the 1400 block of East Southeast Loop 323 in Tyler.

A silver Honda Civic being driven by a 16 year old Robert E. Lee student, and a Chevy Silverado driven by a 17 year old who is also a REL student, were racing down Loop 323 this morning, according to police, weaving in and out of lanes of traffic.

When the Honda Civic switched lanes, police say the driver lost control, hit the median and went airborne. The driver landed on the other side of the median, hitting a Honda Accord head-on. The Accord was being driven by 54 year old Brenda White, who was driving her sixteen year old granddaughter to class at Robert E. Lee High School. All three occupants of the vehicles involved in the accident were transported to Trinity Mother Francis Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.

Brenda White is listed in fair condition in the hospital. The driver of the Civic and the granddaughter are listed in good condition.

This case is still under investigation. The driver of the Sliverado fled the scene, but was contacted by police after he was identified by witnesses. Charges may range up to a second degree felony, for racing, causing serious bodily injury.
