Proposed renovations for Smith County Sheriff's office revealed

Voters said no to a new jail, but Smith County officials are still moving forward with other projects they say the county desperately needs.

Monday, renovation plans for the new Smith County Sheriff's office were revealed. It's one of the county's budgeted pay-as-they-go projects. Smith County commissioners approved purchasing and remodeling existing downtown buildings to relocate the Sheriff's department from the old Carlton Hotel building. They say space is needed to meet the county's law enforcement needs.

"It's a very exciting project...it's a very nice looking building for downtown, but it's a very cost effective way to build, and I look forward to building it," said Smith County Judge Joel Baker.

Judge Baker expects the renovation to be completed by the fall of next year.

It's expected to cost around $700,000.
