East Texas Community Helps Fire Victims

As crews cleans up, piles and piles of charred debris are still in the Canterbery's home.

Pasty Canterbery lived at 408 Bailey Street in Kilgore with her children for 16 years, until her home caught fire.

"My daughter called and said, 'mama the house is on fire'. When I got to my house everything was in flames. I was just devastated ... my whole world ... my family ... my children ... that was our life. I thought, 'what are we going to do now?'" said Canterbery.

That's when Pasty says the unthinkable happened: friends, relatives, and even strangers came to her rescue.

"People have been coming and going bringing money, clothes, you name it. Everybody has helped tremendously. It's just been a blessing," said Canterbery.

For Canterbery and her family East Texans lending a helping hands means a lot. Before her home burned down, she showed her generosity to people in need.

"Anybody that nobody else wanted to put up with, we'd take them as long as we could and help them stay with us and try to encourage them and support them ... get them back on track," said Canterbery.

Even though Canterbery's home is totally destroyed, she and her family still have pictures to remember their home by.

"We'll always have everybody pulling together and trying to help each other," said Canterbery.
