Commanding officer for USS Harry S. Truman stops by Longview

The commanding officer for one of the United States largest air carriers stopped by to visit the Longview Greggton Rotary to say thanks. Captain Herman Shelanski commands the USS Harry S. Truman.

During Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Rotary Club adopted the ship and sent e-mails and care packages to the sailors. Captain Shelanski also showed video and pictures from his seven month mission.

"We were supporting the troops on the ground every day in Iraq and whether it was out there as a show of force, flying overhead sometimes was enough, sometimes we strafed the enemy, sometimes we blew up these huge caches of weapons that they found. These IEDs that blow up our shoulders on the ground - the convoys. Our guys were in their taking care of that for them," said Cpt. Shelanski.

Captain Shelanski says a surprisingly large numbers of sailors on his ship are from Texas. He says it's always an honor to meet the Texans because they all stand out.
