Voters in Smith county and the Tyler Independent School District will have a choice to make on November fourth. Two questions will be answered on this date. First, do we build new jail facilities and second, do we build new school houses? The past arguments about poor leadership and bad plans are no longer valid. Smith county commissioners have put together a comprehensive plan that included experts, community leaders and the general public. I have seen no valid arguments that demonstrate flaws in the plan they're asking you to approve. Likewise, TISD showed us they will be good stewards of the money you give them. Phase one was completed according to the plan and under budget.
For most of us the vote will probably boil down to a financial decision. No doubt you know that construction costs rise every day we delay this inevitable decision. I urge you to carefully consider a couple of things before you vote. First, take the time to study the plans. Second, and most important, consider the impact your decision will have on the lives of law enforcement who work hard day and night to get prisoners off the streets and behind bars. And also for the teachers and children who are building our future in inadequate and in some cases depilated facilities. Remember, your vote can make this a better east Texas.
