Smith County requests two more courts to help ease court congestion

One more district court and one more county court at law - that was the request made by the Smith county council of judges to Smith county commissioners this afternoon. Since 1978, the number of felony cases in the county has grown from just over 300 to a little more than 3,300 each year. Some say that's a problem when it comes to giving people access to justice.

"It's a good thing for our county it'll help our judicial resources...help cases move through a little faster....help the lawyers and their clients get into court a little quicker than they have to now because there is a waiting line," said Judge Kerry Russell with the 7th District Court.

Back in September, Smith County Commissioners voted to request one additional district court from the state legislature.

There is another meeting scheduled for 5:00 pm tomorrow at the Smith County Annex Building to discuss exactly where those courts can be housed.
