Students in Angelina County have been receiving antibiotics today, after a rise of purtussis has been seen in the U.S., including Angelina county.
Also known as whooping cough, there have been 8 lab-confirmed cases in Angelina county and 30 probable cases.
So far, the health district has treated more than 200 people, not including those students and teachers treated today at Brandon Elementary.
"We wanna make sure we don't have someone with the disease and then have complications and they wind up in the hospital and possible death," said Sharon Shaw, with the Angelina County and Cities Health District.
Local health officials say they are doing their part in the schools and among the public to prevent the virus from spreading.
