Gladewater couple receives top award from state for foster parenting

For years, they have opened their home to dozens of children, giving them love and hope for the future, and this Gladewater couple has been honored as the foster parents of the year in Texas.

KLTV 7's Bob Hallmark has more on this loving pair who were too busy with their kids to accept the award!

They do a mountain of laundry every week and keep their refrigerator stocked full enough to feed a battalion, but for Tammy and Doug Kegarise, who have fostered 32 children over the years, they wouldn't have it any other way.

"For the love of the kids to help the kids out, try to give them something they're missing, stability, self esteem, respect, an opportunity to break the cycle."

In recognition , they've received the honor of foster parents of the year from the state, but they couldn't go to accept it. They were having birthdays for the kids.

"I was shocked. We were having a party for 2 of our kids and we had tons of kids here and I said I can't believe it! We just all started screaming in the backyard."

They have been foster parents for over 10 years, and they've adopted 3 children - all easy, they say, because they had love to give.

"When you see the look on a kid's face like at a birthday party they've never had or Christmas when they see all the family together...and they come up to me and say, I love you."

As long as they have a home, children will be welcome. Right now, Tammy and Doug are fostering eight children.
