After 7 DWIs, Tatum man given 99 years in prison

Seven different DWIs - and now an East Texas man is on his way to jail. Today, Roger Guess, 48, of Tatum was sentenced in Smith County. Yesterday, he was found guilty of drunk driving. KLTV 7's Layron Livingston was in court when that decision was handed down.

Guess has convictions spanning more than two decades with his first, back in 1987.

That's why the prosecutor in this case wanted to send a message to the jurors to make sure that didn't happen again.

"Ladies and gentleman, for the citizens of Smith County - and wherever - don't let him out," said Guy Conine, the prosecuter for Smith County.

Guess was arrested back in May after a DPS Trooper found him drunk, sitting in his van on the side of the road. Today, a Smith County jury sentenced him to 99 years in jail.

We also learned Mr. Guess was actually on out on parole during his May arrest, stemming from a 2004 DWI conviction.

Guess has requested an appeal and an attorney has been assigned to take up the case. As for now, he will be eligible for parole after 15 years.

Layron Livingston, reporting.
