Tyler Leads State in Economic Development

Tyler is number one in the state. That's according to the Texas Economic Development Council. Tyler was given the Community Economic Development Award for it's ability to retain jobs, attract new jobs, and encourage investment over the last year.

Some of the projects that lead to the award are the New Skills Training Center on the West Loop, and 600 new jobs with Cox Communications. Tyler Pipe invested nearly $45 million in renovating it's Tyler plant. And, Alstom Power just completed it's expansion in Tyler last month.

Tom Mullins with the Tyler Economic Development Council says much of the city's success is due to the diversity within the local economy.  "Tyler's economy has continued to do well. It's not as strong as maybe some other years in the past. But, we've still outperformed lots of cities in Texas. And this award kind of verifies that."

Tyler and Lindale jointly won the same award in 1997 for improvements near Interstate 20.
