Barack Obama is cutting short his campaign schedule later this week to visit his elderly grandmother, who recently fell and broke her hip.
After a morning rally in Indianapolis Thursday, he plans to leave the campaign trail and fly to Hawaii to see Madelyn Dunham. The 85-year-old helped raise Obama and is described as "gravely ill."
A relative says Dunham "has not been well for a long time." He says she was hospitalized recently, but is now back in her Honolulu apartment, where Obama's sister cares for her. He says she previously had a hip replacement.
A spokesman says Obama's wife, Michelle, will sub for the candidate at rallies in Akron and Columbus, Ohio.
Aides say Obama will likely resume campaigning Saturday, probably in a Western state, such as Nevada.
