The Ryan Express Stops in Tyler

The Ryan Express made a stop in Tyler Friday morning.

Strikeout king and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan was the speaker at the Rose Festival Distinguished Men's Luncheon.

Ryan signed dozens of autographs for fans. He is currently team president of the Texas Rangers. He talked to the crowd about his career and the future of the Rangers. Ryan told KLTV 7 Sports the team has the hitters in place but there is still something missing. He hopes to take care of that during the off season.

"Now with free agents and with trades during the winter meetings, we'll look at what's available and what we might be able to do to strengthen our pitching staff," Ryan said. "We feel like that is our number one priority and we'll see if there is a possibility in doing that and if we think it makes since then I think we will be willing to do it."

We also asked the native Texan how he felt about his rookie star from East Texas, Longview's Chris Davis.

"We think that he has a bright future for us," Ryan said. "We probably look at him as a first baseman in the big leagues and feel like at some point and time that's probably going to be his permanent position. But we couldn't have been any happier about the production and the way he went about his job this year when he came up to the big leagues."

Davis ended the season at third base. Hank Blalock is the Rangers' current first baseman.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
