3 evolution critics on panel to review Texas curriculum

State Board of Education members have chosen six panelists to review a draft of new science curriculum standards for Texas public schools.

The panel includes three critics of evolution.

Three other members are veteran science professors from the University of Texas at Austin, Texas Tech and Southern Methodist University.

Author Stephen Meyer is vice president of the Discovery Institute, a Seattle-based group that promotes an explanation of the origin of life similar to creationism. The other author is Ralph Seelke, a biology professor at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

Also on the panel is Baylor University chemistry professor Charles Garner.

Meanwhile, SMU anthropology professor Ronald Wetherington also serves as director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at the school in Dallas.

UT-Austin biology Professor David Hillis and Texas Tech Professor Gerald Skoog have joined a group of science educators wanting to eliminate a current requirement that weaknesses of the theory of evolution be taught.
