Father and Son Stranded on River Trip

A young boy and his father were stranded in mucky waters overnight, when their trip down the Neches River turned treacherous.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's department received word Sunday night that Ryan Holt, 4, and his father Gary were missing on the river. The two planned to canoe down the river Sunday, but never returned home.

Gary Holt says trees blocking the water way and shallow waters delayed their trip. The two finally got stuck at one tree trunk and decided to spend the night in the woods.

"We were stranded and wedged up, and the boat wasn't moving," said Gary Holt. "I got out and drug it up onto the bank...We slept on the ground."

Cherokee County authorities say the Neches River is not really safe for canoeing, especially when waters get low.
