County files suit against Texas AG on jail plans

Smith County has filed a lawsuit against Texas Attorney General Gregg Abbot, hoping to clarify last week's ruling that detailed floor plans of any future Smith County Jail should be released to the general public.

Monday, the Smith County Commissioner's Court decided to support Sheriff JB Smith's opinion that releasing the plans would pose a hazard to his officers and citizens.

"As Sheriff J. B. Smith has already stated, this is a very serious matter that has the potential to impact current Smith County jail facilities, future jail facilities, and every detention facility in the State of Texas," said Commissioner JoAnn Fleming in a statement to the press today. "We will fight for an outcome that will protect our own law enforcement officers and the thousands who proudly serve all across this state.  The Sheriff's Association of Texas supports our efforts as does the Texas Commission on Jail Standards."

The petition was filed in the 353rd Judicial District in Travis County on Wednesday.
