Smith County Council Of Judges Discuss Jail Plan And Court Facilities

At the heart of the discussion--jail overcrowding and the proposed Smith County Jail plan.

Smith County Judge Joel Baker was invited to the meeting, and presented the "no frills" jail plan.

Some judges said more courts and facilities could ease overcrowding problems.

Judge Cynthia Kent presides over the 114th District Court.  She said adding courts also presents another issue--where to put them.

"The reality is we cannot cram anymore courts into the courthouse and keep the public safe," she said.  "We need adequate facilities, and instead of building an expensive jail, let's build less expensive courts and address the overcrowding problem."

The judges agreed to meet with the Smith County Commissioners Court on October 27 to discuss the need for more court facilities.

Back in September, Smith County Commissioners moved to request one additional district court from the Texas legislature.
