Man Indicted In Death of Gilmer Firefighter

An indictment is handed down against a man accused in a boating wreck that killed an East Texas firefighter.

Michael Wilcox, 22 of Lufkin, was indicted Monday on a charge of criminal negligence in the death of 26 year-old Chris Carpenter.

In June, Wilcox reportedly collided with another boat on Lake Cherokee, sending Carpenter overboard.

Carpenter, who was a Gilmer firefighter, was killed on impact and his body was recovered days latter from the lake. Investigators say Wilcox and several other passengers appeared intoxicated at the time of the wreck.

Court documents states that Wilcox's boat failed to display adequate navigational lighting sufficient to warn other boats.
