One out of every ten Americans who served in Vietnam was a casualty. 58,169 were killed and 304,000 wounded out of 2.59 million who served.
Bill Hamby would have also become a statistic if not for a simple rubber band. Hamby served two tours of duty in Vietnam and during the first tour was often in battle. During the second tour he was in counter-intelligence, debriefing enemy conbatants and providing security for the base. One day while checking ut civilian workers, he was handed a coffee can by a small boy who ran away. Hamby took the lid off the can only to find a grenade with the pin already pulled. Only a rubber band was holding the spoon of the grenade down. The grenade was set in gasoline which would have soon eaten trhough th rubber band
Buill Hamby served twenty years in the Marie Corps and today is active in "Soldiers Angels", a group providing services, money, an support to our military.
