2 Colombian warlords get decades in US prison

Two Colombian warlords from a far-right paramilitary group blamed for numerous atrocities will spend decades in U.S. prison for cocaine conspiracy convictions.

A federal judge in Miami on Thursday sentenced 60-year-old Ramiro Vanoy Murillo to more than 24 years behind bars and 38-year-old Francisco Javier Zuluaga Lindo to almost 22 years. They were among 14 Colombian paramilitary members extradited to the U.S. in May.

The sentences were higher than expected when the two men pleaded guilty in July. The Bush administration agreed it would not seek the maximum life sentences against any of the warlords in exchange for their extradition.

The right-wing warlords are blamed in Colombia for hundreds of killings, rapes and kidnappings.
