Lobo Vondrell McGee Following In Father's Footsteps

When Texas & Oklahoma hook up in the Red River Shootout on Saturday, Victor McGee wouldn't miss it for the world.

"Oh, I'm going to the game," Victor laughs. "It's a game you can't miss, I would love to be playing in it myself."

His son Vondrell starred at Longview before going off to college and joining the UT backfield. Victor says his college career at Kilgore and West Texas A&M showed him how long big games like this one stay with you.

"That's what college football is all about," he said. "You want to be able to play in big games, you have memories to be able to pass on down to your kids. I'm proud that he'll have the opportunity to experience things like this. Thank God I had the chance to learn some things to pass on to him."

The two talk all the time, with the former college star passing on his experience, and the lessons he learned.

"You just have to enjoy it while you can. You don't need to look back at what you wish you ‘coulda shoulda done.' You have to enjoy the moment while it lasts, because it doesn't last forever."

Victor cheers for Vondrell on the field, but says he may be most proud of his son taking advantage of his opportunity in the classrooms.

"I've always wanted him to have a better opportunity than I had, and he's getting that opportunity to get that education and be a part of the Texas Longhorns. It's something special. He'll have a lot of great memories and the opportunity to have a great future."
