Texas considering standardizing GPA calculations

A state agency is considering standardizing the way Texas high schools calculate grade point averages. But critics contend the proposal would encourage students to avoid rigorous courses.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will decide October 23rd whether to approve the changes. The board's commissioner told The Dallas Morning News that the changes will bring uniformity across high schools and help colleges and universities better compare students during the admissions process.

One aspect of the proposal involves eliminating extra credit for students who take Pre-Advanced Placement courses or Pre-International Baccalaureate courses as freshmen and sophomores.

But school superintendents said eliminating extra credit for challenging prerequisite courses would discourage students from taking them.
