From Buckeye to Sooner Johnson Continues To Shine

Gilmer's Manuel Johnson has earned the number one he wears on his jersey.

He was the quarterback for the Buckeyes 2004 state champion team and is the top ranked Oklahoma Sooner's leading receiver.

Preparing for fifth ranked Texas this weekend, Manny hopes to stay on top.

In five games this season, Manny has 26 receptions for 468 yards and five touchdowns, one of the many big reasons why Oklahoma is ranked first.

"We should be number one every year," Manny said. "We just have had some minor slip-ups and mistakes that hurt us. We're just trying to eliminate those this year so we can have a great season like we anticipated."

Two weeks ago against TCU, Manny set an Oklahoma record with three touchdowns and 206 yards. He followed that up with 92 yards and a touchdown against Baylor. However, Manny is quick to point out it might not be as easy against Texas.

"In our conference you can't look past anybody," he said. "I mean it's Texas. We play Texas every year it's not like we play them once every ten years so we know what to expect. "

As a senior, Manny is projected to be a pick in the 2009 NFL draft. Before turning pro, Manny has to take care of some business in his last Texas-OU game.

"I want to win," Manny said. "Right now I'm 1-2. We lost two times and won last year for the first time, so hopefully if I can go out 50 percent that will be great."

Texas and Oklahoma play Saturday, October 11th at 11:00 a.m. The game will be broadcast on KLTV 7. KLTV 7 Sports will be at the game and have full coverage of all the East Texas players on KLTV 7 News at 6 and 10 p.m.
