Winona Five-0: Wildcats Remain Undefeated

The Winona Wildcats are undefeated.

The streak comes just one season after the Wildcats went 4-6. At 5-and-0, players, coaches and the community have Wildcat fever.

Winona has struggled in recent years. The Wildcats had just one win in 2006. Now they are 2-0 in district play. That record improved when the Wildcats defeated Sabine last Friday 48-3.

In their fourth year with Mike Sorenson as head football coach, players say everything is clicking. For this varsity team, it feels good to have community support.

"It feels great you know, knowing that people are acknowledging you and little kids are watching you," receiver C.J. Petty said. "It just feels great to know that you are doing the right thing."

"We've got a lot more heart than we did last year," running back Bryan Waters said. "Last year people wanted to win but never really carried out with it. But this year they carried out with it a lot more, by lifting weights in the off season. Even during the summer you had a full weight room."

"We've had a ground swelling of support from within the school," Coach Mike Sorenson said. "The administration, the faculty and the students have believed in us all along. Now we've given our community something to rally behind. I'm excited about that for them and I'm excited about that for our kids."

Winona will play at Union Grove this Friday night.
