Storm Shuts Down Police Phone Lines

In Rusk, the fire and police departments were caught off-guard Tuesday morning when lightning took out all their radio and phone systems.

Both agencies found themselves operating with only two, back-up emergency lines. All their main lines and scanners were dead.

They say lightning struck somewhere outside the building around 10 a.m. They believe a tower near the police department was the point of impact.

Other businesses in downtown Rusk, including city hall, were also affected.

The city's police and fire departments used portable scanners until their lines were restored.
