Aryan Brotherhood trial goes to jury

A federal jury will begin deliberations today on charges that members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas conspired to have a former sheriff's deputy killed.

The alleged conspiracy failed before former Otero County Sheriff's Deputy Billy Anders was killed.

Anders was targeted after he responded to a domestic violence call in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, and fatally shot New Mexico Brotherhood leader Earl Lee Flippen.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Randy Castellano and Renee Camacho say that the brotherhood members communicated their plan to kill Anders using coded notes that reached behind the walls of a Texas prison.

Defense attorneys say the prosecution tried to make the case about race, even though race played no part in what they described was a series of small conspiracies and not one giant one.
