Bulletproof glass added to Smith County Courthouse

Bulletproof glass will be part of the plan to give the Smith County Courthouse a facelift.

Smith County Commissioners gave the go-ahead this morning during their regular meeting.

Back in 2005, a gunman opened fire outside the courthouse, killing two people.

Smith County Judge Joel Baker says security is one of the biggest improvement projects for a number of county buildings.

"That was something that was recommended years ago by a consultant and never was funded, so we looked at that and decided that was in the best interest of the public, our employees and elected officials at the courthouse, so we've decided to move forward with that," Judge Baker said today.

The project is part of the commissioners pay-as-you-go plan to update existing Smith County facilities.
