Rival Redskins Give Cowboys First Loss of the Season

After three weeks of being the NFL's most dominant team, the Cowboys were brought back down to Earth Sunday afternoon.

"I don't have any excuses, they played better than we did," head coach Wade Phillips.

The Cowboys had a chance, but it was too little too late. After pulling within two points with less than two minutes to play, any shot of a miracle play slipped through their fingers.

"We hard our opportunities early in the game and just didn't take advantage of them," Phillips said.

Adding insult to injury for many fans, the Cowboys first loss of the 2008 season was handed to them by their NFC East rival, the Washington Redskins.

"Obviously you want to try and win as many division games as you can," wide receiver Terrell Owens said. "Obviously this is history and it goes back before I was born. That's Cowboys-Redskins."

"We knew we had a great opponent," quarterback Tony Romo said. "A good rivalry game. Guys came in ready to go. (The Redskins) did a good job."

The Redskins controlled the clock for 38 minutes and nine seconds compared to the Cowboys 21 minutes, 51 seconds. The Redskins had 161 rushing yards, Dallas 44.

"I thought they out played us," Phillips added. "I thought they out played our offense and defense, our special teams, our coaching."

"It's my fault," Phillips continued. "I'm the coach. We've got to get them coached better to make those plays."

"The only benefit I see to getting a loss this time of year to a team like this is that you know some of the negative things you did and you get to work on it," Romo said. "I think we'll be able to go back and look at some of the things we need to do to get better at."

This was Washington's last regular season game appearance at Texas Stadium. The Cowboys are now 1-1 against NFC East opponents.

"This division is a tough division," Coach Phillips said. "I've said it all along, these kind of games are the reason why."

The Cowboys play the Redskins again November 16th. That is one week after their bye, two weeks after their road game against the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants. To avoid a tricky situation, it will be a divisional game the Cowboys have to win.
