S. Texas mayor accused of sex crime with teen girl

Just-released indictments say the mayor of a South Texas town who is already required to register as a sex offender -- fondled and inappropriately touched a young girl six weeks before a 2007 trial for indecency with a child.

An Atascosa County grand jury Monday indicted Poteet Mayor Lino Donato on one count each of aggravated sexual assault, indecency with a child by contact and attempted indecency with a child by contact, all felony offenses.

The indictments released today say the three incidents occurred in August 2007 and involved a girl who was younger than 14.

The San Antonio Express-News reports district attorney Rene Peña said law enforcement officials learned about the allegations last month. That is the same month Peña and City Council members were trying to oust the mayor from office.

Donato pleaded guilty in October to indecency counts involving two girls but is now appealing.
