Weekend Fishing Turns Fatal on Bellwood Lake

An accident on Bellwood Lake causes a day of fishing to end in death. About five Saturday afternoon, a man fishing on the West Tyler lake reportedly slipped and fell in. His companion called for help and tried to rescue him, but the victim could not be found.

Tyler Police and a Smith County Dive Team both searched for the man, eventually finding him shortly after seven thirty. Authorities say the victim may have stepped off the relatively steep slope of the lake, and quickly gotten in over his head.

Game Warden Daniel Mueller said, "I just believe he was hot, probably. He went in to cool off, didn't realize there was a drastic slope, slipped, and fell down that slope and was unable to swim very well and got surprised by it and went under.

The body was discovered by the Smith County Alert Dive Team. The man is described as a black man in his mid fifties. The name of the man is being withheld pending notification of his family.
