Opponents fighting Farmers Branch in court again

Opponents are back in court fighting a Dallas suburb's latest effort to target illegal immigrants through apartment or home rentals.

They filed a lawsuit Wednesday to prevent Farmers Branch from requiring prospective renters to obtain a license from the city. Under the city rule, the information would be forwarded to the federal government for verification of a tenant's legal immigration status.

City officials wrote the latest ordinance to go into effect 15 days after a judge's final ruling on a previous ordinance that was challenged in court. That came Thursday, when a federal judge struck down an ordinance that would have required apartment operators to verify whether prospective tenants were living in the country legally.
