Coaches Prepare For Gladewater Classic

In Gladewater Tuesday afternoon, six competing coaches gathered to kickoff their season and enjoy some Mexican cuisine.

The Gladewater Classic kickoff luncheon was held at Tele's Restaurant. Beginning on Thursday, six teams will compete at classic Jack V. Murphy Stadium.

The list of teams includes Lindale and Spring Hill who open the season against each other for an eighth straight year.

"Since I've been at Spring Hill we've opened up the season against Lindale and it's been very competitive games," Panther coach Robert Bero said. "Last year we went into overtime. We were lucky enough to win it in overtime against Lindale."

"The year before I think we won it and the year before they won it," Eagle coach Mike Meador said, "so I mean it's a constant battle back and forth. it's not a bitter rivalry but it is a good rivalry."

The Gladewater Classic kicks off Thursday night with Center taking on Gladewater. Friday night it is the Lindale and Spring Hill matchup. On Saturday, Elysian Fields will face Troup at 6 p.m.

Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
