Smith county volunteer fire departments are no longer funded by the county.
This ending was expected, and the fire departments will band together and form two emergency services districts. These districts will collect taxes to fund the departments.
Smith county Fire Marshal Jim Seaton told KLTV 7 this change will better serve the community and the volunteer fire departments.
"Now they will be able to have a little bit more funding to upgrade their equipment and personal protective for the firefighters," said Seaton.
The official end of the contract with the county is October 1st.
