Thousands of neighborhoods across the country, and many here in East Texas gathered Tuesday night to stand up against crime.
It's called "National Night Out," where neighbors are encouraged to get to know and look out for each other. The campaign was started 19 years ago by the National Association of Town. The group felt they could deter crime by getting neighbors to know each other and work together.
In Mineola, there were nine new block parties added since last year, and in Tyler, Mayor Joey Seeber and Tyler police visited with neighbors at each party.
Mineola even plans to enter their "National Night Out" campaign into a nationwide contest. Cities with the best marketing plans and participation rates will be recognized.
