American Airlines waives baggage fees for soldiers after PR nightmare

American Airlines says they will no longer charge our active servicemen and women for excess baggage on their flights. As we reported last night, an east Texas soldier was stranded in Alaska because he did not have $160 to check his bag on a flight home.

His mother spoke with KLTV 7 today about the airline's sudden change of heart.

"Our military is stretched to the limit, and they are under, their families are under stress, the soldiers are under stress. I think this is just one obstacle removed to make the transition between stations and war zones and home less worrisome," said Melanie Poland.

American Airlines is contracted by the Defense Department to take active servicemen and women to and from base.
