Two dead in apparent backyard murder-suicide; authorities find four children in home

Authorities are investigating what they believe to be a murder-suicide after an east Texas mother and her male friend were both found dead this afternoon.

That home is located off Tank Farm Road. The bodies of Maria Loredo and her friend found in the backyard.

KLTV 7's Courtney Lane was on the scene today, and brings you the story.

Unsure about what happened outside the Van Zandt county home, family members arrive in the dozens. Upon hearing the tragic news, they could only lean on each other for comfort.

The bodies of Maria Loredo and her male friend were found in the backyard by a contractor around 11:15 am this morning.

"There is a gun and knife present, on the ground there. We don't know how they were killed at this point though," said Chief Deputy John Turner.

Four children were inside the home at the time, unaware of what happened.

Two of them were Loredo's children who've now lost both parents.

Loredo's husband was killed in a car accident last year.

"The lady has a couple older kids who did not live here and they're taking care of the younger siblings...they have a little support system for them," said Deputy Turner.

The Van Zandt County Sheriff's has not yet released the man's name. Autopsies have been ordered to help investigators find out exactly what happened.
