Update: Four children found inside home in apparent Colfax murder-suicide

Van Zandt County investigators have confirmed to KLTV 7 News that two people are dead in what appears to be a murder-suicide off Tank Farm Road near the Colfax community southeast of Canton.

Chief Deputy John Turner tells us that a man and woman were found dead in the back yard of their home. A gun and knife were found near the bodies. Autopsies have been ordered to determine the cause of the death. Four children were inside the house when deputies arrived, ranging in ages from 13 to 19. The couple appeared to be in their 40s and did not appear to be married, according to Deputy Turner.

"The lady has a couple older kids who did not live here and they're taking care of the younger siblings...they have a little support system for them," said Deputy Turner.

A contractor who arrived at the home to do some work discovered the bodies and contacted authorities around 11:15 am this morning.

Both Smith County Crime Stoppers and the Texas Rangers are helping Van Zandt County investigators on the case. No names have yet been released in the case.

KLTV 7 News has a crew on the scene, and will more for you tonight at 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm, and 10:00 pm.
