Rep. Tommy Merritt of District 7 announced today that Gladewater Independent School District will recieve a $500,000 grant award from the Technology Immersion Strand of the Vision 2020 Grant Program. The award is a two year project funded under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, and is adminstered through the Texas Education Agency.
High School students and core curriculum teachers will each receive a lap top computer. The district will also be receiving online software for students with a built-in assessment tool, as well as professional development for teachers and wireless internet access.
Gladewater was among 17 chosen from a pool of 80 applicants in Texas, according to Gay Lewis, technology director for the district. "We are very excited -- this is such a rare opportunity," Lewis said.
