A big weekend for back-to-school shopping is right around the corner. The tax-free weekend starts midnight Friday and runs through Sunday.
Many stores are promoting additional discounts and sales to compete for customers. The state started the holiday four years ago to help families who were burdened with back-to-school expenses.
Kay Ann McKinney, a mother of five, says the holiday has been a life saver. "It would be nice if you could do it mid-year," McKinney says. "About every six months children grow out of their shoes, and that's a very big expense.
Not all merchandise will be tax-free. Only items under $100 qualify for a tax exemption and things like back-packs, wallets, purses, jewelry and leather goods will still be taxed.
