Congressman Barney Frank, (D) Massachusetts, wants the federal government to remove criminal penalties for personal possession of marijuana.
He's introducing a bill that would remove those penalties for possession of up to 100 grams of pot or the transfer of up to an ounce as long as no money is made from it.
The Massachusetts Democrat says there are more important matters for federal law enforcement officers to spend their time on.
"I cannot think there are many people who are in favor of using limited federal resources in law enforcement to arrest people because those people decide to smoke marijuana," Congressman Frank said.
The bill would not change federal laws that ban the cultivation, import, export or sale of marijuana for a profit.
