Employees of the Tyler Bennigan's got a shock today as they arrived for work when they learned that it had been shut down by its parent company, Metromedia Restaurant Group.
Confused customers and employees milled about outside the local Bennigan's when our cameras were there at lunchtime today. Employees confirmed to KLTV 7 News that they had no advance warning and were simply told today that they were without jobs. Even the management of the local restaurant had no idea today that they would be unemployed.
Metromedia Restaurant Group filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy today in the Eastern District of Texas, and will liquidate their assets to pay their at least 49 creditors. The company is based in Plano. Bennigan's Restaurants that are part of the original Bennigan's franchise will stay open, but most Bennigan's are operated by Metromedia Restaurant Group, and will be closed - more than 800 total.
The doors of the Bennigan's are chained shut today. Until today, it had been a popular Tyler hangout and eatery.
