Crews are scheduled to close the SH 31 exit from westbound I-20 in Gregg County on Monday, July 28, as part of a bridge repair project.
Crews will be replacing the bridge decking on the I-20 overpass over SH 31, and rebuilding I-20's outside westbound lane adjacent to the bridge. Westbound traffic has been reduced to one lane in the work area for the next six months while this phase of the project is underway.
Eastbound I-20 traffic will not be affected, though various lanes could be closed periodically on SH 31 during the replacement of the bridge decking.
Once the SH 31 exit is closed from westbound I-20, traffic will be encouraged to use the Loop 281 (Estes Parkway) exit for Longview, and the FM 2087 exit for Kilgore. From FM 2087, traffic would turn west on FM 349, which meets SH 31 in Kilgore at US 259.
In addition, a temporary traffic signal has been installed at the SH 42/I-20 interchange to assist traffic exiting at that location. The signal was be set to flash on July 14 and will be set to cycle once the SH 31 exit is closed.
