The small community of Avinger has a big problem. Even with a posted speed limit of 35, speeding cars and trucks are making life tough for area business-people.
Highway 49 is a major truck route to Interstate 30 and it goes right through downtown Avinger. With no stop light or even a stop sign, it leaves pedestrians on their own.
The town only has budget for a part-time officer who patrols 12 hours a week. There have been numerous near misses and even a fatal accident at a street corner several months back.
Local business people have tried every avenue to solve the problem, including calling state representatives, D.P.S. officers and the sheriffs office. Even on Sunday there were trucks roaring through downtown.
