With the scorching temperatures outside nearly everyday, its only natural that many people want to beat the heat in a city pool.
But many of the kids and adults who enjoy the city pools in East Texas have fewer places to do it now.
The indoor facility at Paula Martin Jones center is closed because of a shortage of lifeguards.
Children who had previously come to the center for summer public swims can no longer attend now unless it is through membership.
Low attendance and the lifeguard shortage at other pools prompted the move, leaving the city with only 3 pools for public swimming.
The city didn't want kids in surrounding neighborhoods, who normally attended the center to be without, though, so a shuttle system now carries the kids to area pools like Ingram and the Longview swim center.
