Fire officials tell KLTV 7 they are still on the scene of a fire at the Pilgrims Pride Plant located in Mount Pleasant.

The fire started around 9p.m. Monday at the protein conversion plant which is where the byproducts are taken for rendering, according to Ray Atkinson, Director of Corporate Communication for Pilgrim's Pride.

Mount Pleasant Fire officials said a firefighter was transported to a local hospital during the blaze. That firefighter was treated and released for a minor injury.

A spokesperson for Pilgrim's Pride said the extent of the fire will not be known until the Mount Pleasant Fire Department allows them access to the building. MPFD officials said they expect to be on the scene putting out hot spots until at least sunrise.

An eyewitness to the blaze told our crew on the scene three smokestacks collapsed during the fire.
