Celebrating freedom and independence and remembering those who have fought for it was the focus of an Independence Day gathering in Longview today.
Several hundred people gathered at the courthouse steps today to hear messages of patriotism and pride from current and former military members.
East Texas veterans of World War II, Korea , Vietnam and both Iraq wars were recognized for their service.
Mostly it was to a powerful document, that Americans have defended through generations... The Declaration of Independence.
Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt told KLTV 7, "They put their lives and families lives on the line to create a country that is providing world leadership where we have done and provide the brave men and women to defend freedom that this document has allowed us to do."
Former members of all service branches were in attendance at todays ceremony.
