Rabies infections are on a record pace for East Texas, with another case this week. A rabid skunk was found in a yard in the vicinity of county road 42 in Smith County. This is the third known rabid animal this year in Smith County. A total of 67 rabid skunks and bats have been found in East Texas this year. That's nearly doubled in the past few years...and with one more case will equal the total number from last year. The public health district want's to remind you not to handle skunks, raccoons, bats or other wild animals, and to make sure your pets are current on their rabies vaccinations.
